Car Scrapping – How Does It Work?

If you’re looking to scrap your car or its parts, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re new to the process and unsure what to expect, we’ll break down the steps for you. Car scrapping has never been easier!

How To Get Started

First, you need to make sure your vehicle qualifies. We recycle ELV (end of life vehicles) that are no longer fit or purpose or safe to drive on the road. We accept MOT failures, insurance write-offs, fleet vehicles, junk, salvages and more. If you’re in doubt of what we can accept, give us a call. Our friendly team are always available to assist.

Car Scrapping Procedure

After you’ve determined if your vehicle is recyclable, you need to take it to an authorised treatment facility (like Ammanford Recycling) for scrapping. This is a legal requirement because certain car parts can be damaging to the environment, so it’s important they are disposed of by a qualified business. Before your vehicle is destroyed, remove your license plate if you want to keep it – especially if it’s custom made.

Legal documentation needs to be submitted before anything else. You must provide your V5C registration certificate and other important documentation, such as your owner manual and the vehicle’s service history. We’re more than happy to handle paperwork on your behalf. The vehicle is then dismantled and put through a depollution process. This is important to ensure all hazardous materials are disposed properly through the correct channels. Ultimately, this reduces environmental damage, which is a win for everyone!

Informing The DVLA

Once this is done, it’s important (and a legal requirement) to inform the DVLA that you’ve scrapped your car, otherwise you can be fined £1,000. No one wants that, so let them know as soon as possible.

You’re all done! Congratulations, you’ve scrapped your car. The process is quick, easy and rewarding. For any queries or concerns, contact our friendly team on 01269 596 904. We’re always happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, electronic equipment like entertainment systems and GPS may be worth selling beforehand. Wheels, tyres and engines are also common sells. However, these can negatively impact the price you’re offered for your scrap vehicle.

It depends entirely on the ATF. Most do not have the specialist equipment to move a vehicle without wheels, but it is becoming an increasingly popular question due to the sell value of certain alloy wheels. Ultimately, you may also find you’re offered a lower price if your vehicle doesn’t have wheel. This is due to the labour involved and weight adjustments.

The price is variable depending on make, model, age and condition. If you want to know how much you’ll get for your vehicle, you can use our online calculator for an instant quote. For more information, feel free to contact our experts.
